Chessformer is a grid-based puzzle platformer with Chess pieces. Each of the pieces moves as expected, but they fall down after moving and can’t move again until they stop falling. Pieces also stack on top of each other which is key to solving most levels. The goal in each level is to capture the opposing king, who is lazy and never moves,

so don’t worry about losing any pieces. chessformer mixes chess-based movement with platforming, neither of which I’m particularly fond of, but the trailer made it look like a promising combo. the goal is simply to capture the stationary king of the opposite color by moving your own pieces around.

48 levels altogether, 5 unlocked at any given time. always nice to provide more than one puzzle to get stuck on. there is no timer, move counter, real-time elements or any of that nonsense. controls are largely mouse-based, no keyboard movement, but esc leaves the level instead of bringing up a pause menu without losing your progress. r’ resets, ‘u’ is unlimited undo and there are icons for these as well.

clicking a piece shows available move directions, adhering to chess rules: one tile anywhere for your king, any number of tiles in any direction for the queen, as many as you want in cardinal directions for rooks, only diagonals for bishops, L-shape for knights, two tiles up for pawns as their first move, then only one up. only knights can jump over walls, so to speak, to enter blocked areas. fortunately, clicking a piece keeps it selected, no need to do it after every move to see where you can go, though unselecting them with another click should also work.
